As the ethnic Mongolian political prisoner Hada's 15 years prison term is getting close to the end, the Southern Mongolian Human Rights Information Center (SMHRIC) expresses its sincere gratitude to the Amnesty International groups who have been tirelessly urging the Chinese authorities for Hada's immediate release. During the past 15 years these groups have sent hundreds of appeal letters to the Chinese Central Government, Department of State, Central Party Committee, Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR), Party Committee of IMAR, Public Security and prison authorities, calling for the humane treatment and immediate release of Hada.

The followings are pictures and letters sent by some of these groups to Mr. Baatar (Be Te Er in Chinese), Chairman of the Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region:

Dear Chairman

Hada is due to be freed from prison this year after serving his sentence.  As you may know, he was a bookseller before he was arrested. For the last 15 years, he has not been allowed to have any reading material.  Now that he’s close to his release date, he naturally wants to learn about what has happened in the world while he was incarcerated.  As a gesture of goodwill could you allow him some books?

We urgently appeal to you to do this favour for a gentle scholar.

Sincerely

Dear Chairman

Please intercede on behalf of the ethnic Mongol Hada.  He was sentenced to 15 years in Nei Menggu Zizhiqu’s Chifeng Prison in December 1996, for peaceful promotion of  Mongolian culture.  We believe that the Chinese authorities' treatment to him is unjust and inconsistent with international human rights standards.

Therefore, we once again strongly urge the Chinese authorities to release Hada immediately.

Sincerely,

Dear Chairman

We are more concerned than ever about Hada as we have learned that he is very ill.

Hada has spent some time in solitary confinement.  He has repeatedly been chained onto a metal shackle board.  We understand that Hada is not allowed to talk to other inmates, is deprived of regular family contacts and is denied proper medical attention.  His wounds have not healed; he may not leave prison alive.

Your role as the Chairman places you in a unique position to help Hada.  We want to reiterate that his situation is dire. Please do not wait until it is too late.

Sincerely,

Dear Chairman

We are writing on behalf of an ethnic Mongol named Hada.  He was sentenced to 15 years in Nei Menggu Zizhiqu’s Chifeng Prison in December 1996, for peaceful promotion of human rights and Mongolian culture.

We want to stress the seriousness of his injuries caused by beatings and torture.  They have not healed, and we understand that he is not receiving enough food. In addition telephone calls from his family are forbidden and visits severely restricted.

As Chairman, you are in a unique position to secure his release.  We hope you will do so.

Will you let us know what more we can do to help Hada?

          Yours respectfully and sincerely,

Dear Chairman

We urge you to release Hada now!

As you must know, Hada was sentenced to 15 years in Chifeng Prison in late 1996 for the peaceful promotion of  Mongolian culture.  We believe that his treatment to him is unjust and not in keeping with international human rights standards.

You can ensure that justice is done.  Will you release Hada?  We strongly urge you to do so.

Sincerely

Dear Chairman

We are writing about Hada.  We want to stress the seriousness of his health.  It is possible he may not die before he’s released.

We respectfully remind you that your country was awarded the Olympics after Chinese authorities stated that it would help the development of human rights.  By imprisoning activists such as Hada, you are not honouring your commitments.

Please free Hada before it’s too late.

    Kindest regards

T. Homer Kennington
